At Home Paint Night Date

Before Henry was born, people always told us to make sure to continue to make time for date nights. I naively brushed this advice aside thinking, “Of course we will still have date nights!”

Like many things, the reality after Henry was born was much different than what we anticipated it to be like before we were parents. I think we’ve gone on one short date in the entire time since his arrival nine months ago.

One of my goals for 2019 was to prioritize our marriage and date nights again. I know how important it is for my husband and I to spend quality time together, but it is so much easier said than done! We don’t have grandparents that live locally to watch Henry and truthfully, I’m nervous to leave him with a babysitter.

Instead of letting these excuses get in the way, we decided we will start having at home date nights! We plan on alternating choosing the date and we are going to try and be more creative than just watching a movie together on the couch. I plan on sharing all successful ideas that we try here on the blog, so make sure you are subscribed! 🙂

For our first at home date night I thought back to something that we enjoyed doing in our “prior lives”–wine and paint nights. Out of curiosity I searched for easy painting tutorials on YouTube. I shouldn’t have been surprised to find out that there are a TON. From there I planned an at home version for us to do together once Henry was asleep. It was a lot of fun to do something so different and spend some quality time together!

Here is how we did our at home paint night date:

Supplies:

We used this YouTube video. There is a list of supplies that you can use in the video description box, however I didn’t want to have to buy a ton of extras so I used paint that we had at home in similar colors. We also just used paintbrushes that I had laying around. For easels, we propped our canvases up against stools! Be creative and use what you have around the house.

• Device to play YouTube video
• Two canvases
• Acrylic paint: white, black, magenta, blue and yellow
• paintbrushes
• Water cups
• Paper towels
• Easels (or use a kitchen stool like we did!)
• Palette for paint (could also use a paper plate)

Instructions

I set up our paint stations after dinner, before Henry went to bed so that we could get started right away! I lined our table with brown paper sacks, then propped our canvases against a kitchen stool. I also filled the water cups and set up the paint.

When it is time to start, pour yourselves some wine and grab a snack! Start playing the video and follow along. Feel free to press pause if you need some extra time. The pause button is defintley one of the benefits of doing it at home–you never need to feel rushed!

We chose to sit across from each other and didn’t show each other our paintings until the very end for a little friendly competition. I will have to say–I was surprised at how well Jeff’s turned out! He doesn’t consider himself artistic, but I think he did a pretty good job!

Overall, we really enjoyed it and would recommend this at home paint night date for any couple looking to spend some more quality, intentional time together. It was great being able to do it at home, take our time and save a lot of money too! Have fun! 🙂
