These egg shaped crayons are the perfect size for the littlest colorers. The chunky size is easier for small hands to grasp and they are also more durable and won’t snap like thinner crayons will! One more bonus is that if your little one is still putting everything in their mouth (like mine is) they are harder to take a bite out of! 😉

Supplies:

You only need two supplies for this easy project: crayons and a silicone mold!

This is a great way to use up old, broken crayons–but if you don’t have those laying around, then a new box doesn’t cost too much!

You’ll also need a silicone mold. I found mine at Target, but this two pack on Amazon is a much better deal!

This bunny mold is a cute option too!

How to make DIY chunky Easter egg crayons:

  1. Peel your crayons. Save your hands/nails and soak them in a bowl of warm soapy water for a few minutes first! The wrappers will then peel right off.

2. Use your hands, a razor blade or a knife to break the crayons into small pieces. I broke my crayons into thirds or fourths.

3. Place the silicone mold on a baking sheet and then fill the cavities with the crayons. You can do solid colors or mix together colors that you think will look good! This would be a great lesson for older kiddos on color mixing 😉

4. Place in oven for ~25 minutes at 250 degrees. The time will vary greatly depending on the mold you use and how big/deep it is! Keep an eye on it and take them out when all of the crayons have turned to liquid. If you keep them in too long, the pigment will separate from the wax and will leave an annoying clear layer on top!

5. Let the crayons sit out for a few hours to harden. You can also place in the freezer if you are in a time crunch, but I found that mine cracked easily doing this, so be warned! Once crayons are solid again, pop out of the silicone mold.

6. If you are giving them to friends, place a crayon in a bag and attach the free gift tag with a ribbon 🙂 I like to print gift tags on white cardstock to make them a little more sturdy.
