DIY Plaid Christmas Sign

These DIY plaid Christmas signs are so simple to make and are a great addition to farmhouse, rustic or vintage seasonal decor.

I went to Joann’s the other day to look at the Christmas decor. Immediately upon walking in I was distracted by the rows and rows of Christmas fabric. I was especially drawn to all of the beautiful plaid, flannel fabrics. A few yards made it into my cart–the only problem? I don’t sew!

As I thought about how a non-sewer like myself could get away with buying all this fabric, I noticed some cute Christmas sign decorations with plaid backgrounds. It was then that I came up with the idea to use the fabric to make a DIY plaid Christmas sign!

I had some extra frames at home that I knew I could use for the project. I purchased the off white frame from Amazon earlier this year.  (I love these frames! They come in tons of different colors and are high quality for the price!) The brown frame was less than $5 at Walmart.

I stopped by Hobby Lobby and found some thin wooden letters. They are called “Vintage sign Letters” and are sold in a pack of two for less than a dollar! They are flat, lightweight and perfect for this project!

All of the supplies ended up working so well together and I am very happy with the finished product! The best part is that you can customize them however you would like in order to match your home and decor! You can choose whatever color of frame or fabric you like and customize the letters as well. Not only is it customizable– but it’s foolproof! Using the precut letters almost guarantees that your finished product is one that you will be proud to display in your home.

Here is how to make your own DIY plaid Christmas sign:

Supplies:

Step one:

Use acrylic paint to paint your wooden letters. Apply one coat and let it dry. Apply another coat once dry if needed for additional coverage. Set aside to dry completely.

Step two:

Place the glass from the picture frame on your fabric and cut around it leaving ~1″ border on all sides. Leaving the glass on top of the fabric as a guide, cut squares out of each corner so that you create a “flap” on each side of the glass.

Step three:

Place a thin coat of Modge Podge on the entire surface of the glass. Then place the side of the glass with the Modge Podge on the back side of the fabric and press down. Turn the glass and fabric over so the fabric is now on top. Press down on the fabric and smooth it out so that it is laying as flat on the glass as possible.

Step four:

Turn the fabric and glass over again so that the glass is on top. Starting with one side at a time, place a thin line of hot glue on the edge of one side. Immediately fold up the fabric flap and press down. Repeat on on all four sides.

Step five:

Place fabric wrapped glass inside the frame and attach the back of the frame.

Step six:

If you want your letters to appear distressed, sand the edges of each letter with sandpaper.

Step seven:

Use hot glue to attach your letters to the fabric. I suggest laying all of your letters out to get them spaced correctly before starting!
